South Korea's LG Energy Solution is to supply battery modules from its Poland facility for Ford’s commercial vans in the UK and EU markets. Under the contracts, LG Energy Solution is expected to supply a total of 109 GWh of batteries to Ford for its electric commercial vans, starting in 2026 with contract duration ranging from four to six years.

The two companies also agreed that batteries for the current Ford Mustang Mach-E will be produced at LG Energy Solution’s Michigan facility in 2025, instead of Poland, to enhance business efficiency and capitalise on competitive market conditions.

In 2023, LG Energy Solution established the Future Technology Center.

It’s part of the company’s efforts to accelerate its R&D on next-generation battery technologies, as it shifts attention to developing and commercialising advanced batteries for various applications.

This includes semi-solid and solid-state batteries, lightweight lithium-sulfur batteries, and lithium-metal batteries.

David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, says: “These agreements attest to our experience and expertise in powering commercial vehicles with innovative battery technologies designed to handle extreme user environments. Capitalizing on our local production capacity, we will secure leadership in the European market and deliver unmatched values to our customers through advanced battery technologies that effectively address diverse needs.”

To ensure sustainable growth, LG Energy Solution has focused consistent and efficient R&D efforts on securing its technology leadership.

This involves developing new materials, adopting material informatics using AI and focusing on R&D utilising virtual verification and digital twins.
