Volvo Cars has thrown off the cover of its new Volvo EX90, a seven-seater, all-electric SUV. Delivering up to 600 kilometres of tailpipe emission-free driving range on a single charge, according to the WLTP test cycle, it charges from 10 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.
The new model will be built in the US starting in 2023 and later also in China. The company's aim is for those two production facilities to be climate-neutral.
Its safety features include cameras, radars and lidar which are connected to the car’s high-performance core computers, where NVIDIA DRIVE runs Volvo Cars’ in-house software to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world.
It is the first Volvo that’s hardware-ready for unsupervised driving in the future.
The car also offers a 14.5-inch centre screen, with Google built in.
Google apps and services including hands-free help from Google Assistant, Google Maps navigation and more apps on Google Play all come built in.
Starting with the Volvo EX90, the company plans to reveal one fully electric car each year.
By 2030, Volvo Cars aims to sell only fully electric cars, and be a climate-neutral company by 2040.
Jim Rowan, chief executive at Volvo Cars, says: “The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going. It’s fully electric with a range of up to 600 kilometres on a single charge, designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices. The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways.”
Volvo Cars' production plants are located in Gothenburg, Ghent (Belgium), South Carolina (US), Chengdu, Daqing and Taizhou (China). The company also has R&D and design centres in Gothenburg, Camarillo (US) and Shanghai (China).
